When Katy and her daughter, Nicola, approached us about their brand new business idea, Guernsey Tartan, we were delighted to get involved. Katy had designed and registered a Guernsey tartan, where each colour represents a unique aspect of our island. The idea was to then sell products made of the tartan, for which they needed a brand identity plus a website for their online product sales.
For the branding, Katy and Nicola wanted something clear and effective in communicating what they do. After we explored some different ideas, Katy decided on a simple tartan rectangle, with the name in the middle and an outline of Guernsey at the bottom. This showcases the tartan design itself as well as focusing on Guernsey’s heritage. In terms of colour, the branding follows those used in the tartan pattern for consistency, and the main typeface used is a typewriter font to give a more vintage and authentic feel.
To tie in with the branding, the key focus for the website was to make sure that it was clear and easy to navigate. It was important to get all the key information across clearly, supported by relevant images, without it appearing cluttered. The number of pages was condensed to Home, About, Shop and Blog for ease of use, with links between them where appropriate.
It was important for Katy and Nicola that the shop had a range of functionalities, such as the option of back orders depending on stock which is updated automatically, different options for delivery/collection based on region as well as automatic calculations for delivery and tax depending on location. All these requirements were delivered in the form of a clean and concise shopfront which has certainly been put to the test with the high volume of orders that they’ve been receiving!
